The theme is "From 'Connections of Knowledge' to 'Connections between People.'" Humankind is confronting common problems, such as environmental problems, that extend beyond national borders. The technologies to overcome these issues continue to be developed, but working toward solutions to these problems will require people to think of the future and the accumulation of daily activities of individuals, in addition to technologies. Focusing on the problems of water, environmental warming, and aging that are common to cities, the exhibits asks what we should do so that future-oriented efforts to connect people grow into major successes.
Exhibition Space 1: Compassion for nature and life
An image is presented of Japanese who incorporate pictures of the beauty of nature in daily life and live together with nature, and it is shown how this traditional lifestyle is also tied to today's animation culture. Paintings on fusuma and folding screens that adorn Japanese-style rooms and animated exhibits are also shown.
Exhibition Space 2: Issues facing city dwellers
The essence of issues facing city dwellers worldwide is shown, with a focus on water resources, global warming, and aging populations.
Exhibition Space 3: Water resource issues
The exhibit will further people's understanding that populations concentrated in cities are a fundamental cause of water resource problems such as water shortages, and show water purification technologies, desalinization technologies, and biotechnologies that can contribute to overcoming these problems.
Exhibition Space 4: Global warming
With a focus on the global warming problem and the problem of energy usage in daily life, visitors will see how energy-saving technologies and new technologies continue to contribute to resolving this problem and can help us to realize comfortable urban living. The Japan Pavilion itself is an "Eco-Breathing Architecture," and the anti-warming technologies used in the Pavilion are also introduced in the exhibit.
Exhibition Space 5: Aging populations
Experience space (5) image
This exhibit looks at whether robots, information technology, or other technology can contribute to dealing with aging societies. Visitors will see that this is not a dream of the distant future, but something that can be achieved in the near future.
Exhibition Space 6: Connections between people
From visits to several projects that are currently being undertaken to cope with various problems, this exhibit shows how things move forward when people work with a single idea. With this approach the issues themselves (shown in Zone 2) create connections between individuals, and the exhibit shows how "connections between people" have the power to overcome problems.
