To achieve the best theatrical expression of the Japan Pavilion's message "Connect for a harmonious future," important considerations in selecting the directors for the main show were that they be artists who had worked in artistic and cultural exchanges between Japan and China, who produced joint works, and who had the ability to express a message that would resonate in Asia and the world. After a thorough search we selected Makoto Sato, a leading figure in the Japanese theater world who has collaborated in international exchange between Japan and China and produced joint works, and Danny Yung, a Shanghai native who has contributed to joint Sino-Japanese works and has much experience in public stage performances as well as deep knowledge of the role of art and culture in the city.

In producing the Japan Pavilion's main show, I hope to create an easy-to-understand show that does not try to be different; something that will clearly communicate the message even to the children who will be the leaders of the future. I am also delighted to have the opportunity to work together with a Chinese director on the theme of "Connections between People." We have both accumulated a wide range of experience. However, I would like us to go back to our beginnings and try to create a work that speaks to the hearts of both ourselves and children.

Working together with Makoto Sato to produce the main show for the Japan Pavilion is a very interesting experience. Mr. Sato is an old friend through Asian cultural exchanges, and we have worked together before, creating a joint production twelve years ago. This was a stage performance in Okinawa on the concept of a traditional Chinese play, "One Table, Two Chairs." I think that performance was cultural exchange in its truest sense. Cultural exchange is very important, and it could be said that without exchange there is also no development. Through this joint creation, I hope we will look closely at each other's culture and raise a new creative awareness.
